Since the first edition in Uruguay in 1930, the FIFA World Cup has been held 22 times (the 1942 and 1946 tournaments were cancelled due to World War II). The 2026 edition – co‑hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico – will be the 23rd FIFA World Cup and the first ever with three host nations. From 13 teams in 1930 to 48 teams in 2026, the World Cup continues to write football legend after legend.
